Internship Information
The Department of Recreation consists of two divisions: Activities and Aquatics. The internship program is developed for the individual with an emphasis on activity program such as family and adult programs; youth and teen activities; sporting events and special events.
An intern with Woodhaven's Department of Recreation can expect experiences not only in the area of recreation but also in Woodhaven's other departments. The intern function is integrated with Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Finance, Maintenance, Public Safety and Natural Resources.
Compensation and Housing
Intern compensation is based upon his or her experience. The range for compensation is $6.00 - $6.50 per hour. Summer seasonal housing is available on property or assistance is provided to find suitable housing in the surrounding communities.
Transportation
It is necessary for interns to have reliable transportation.Our recreation facilities on site vary between one and three miles apart and our local communities are between three and 20 miles from Woodhaven. Interns are reimbursed mileage if the vehicle is used for business purposes.
Internship Responsibilities
Interns work 40 hours per week. Duties include developement, organization, implementation and evaluation of programs and activities. Other duties include budgeting, composing promotional media and managing other projects as assigned.
Supervision
Overall responsibility for interns is with the Director of Recreation. Immediate supervision for interns is provided by the Recreation Manager. Interns work closely with two to three other programming staff members and occasionally with the 40 plus other employees in the department. A variety of training opportunities are provided to better prepare interns for a management position upon completion of the program.
Application Deadlines
The standard internships are offered from mid-May to September. The deadline for summer internship applications is April. Fall and Spring internship, or other combinations may be negotiated based on each candidate and the opportunities in the department.
